Welcome to the GARFIELD RIDGE CIVIC LEAGUE
"The community that Shares and Cares"
Made up of People who Care about Their Community
We are a citizens group representing the homeowners, voters and taxpayers of the Garfield Ridge Community of Chicago. Remember there is strength in numbers.
The Garfield Ridge Civic League has had some informative speakers during the past two months of March and April. March 19 Jonathan Lopez of the Community Advisory Council discussed an initiative, spanning four communities, including Garfield Ridge, that is centered on the health care needs of each community. For example, while noise pollution was a common problem in the Garfield Ridge community, annoying odors from the Sanitary and Ship canal were expressed by many residents of the village of Stickney. Berwyn -with the local community hospital- and the Town of Cicero were the other two communities also being reviewed for health needs and concerns by the Council. The Community Advisory Council is an ad hoc committe of about 25 volunteers -mostly college students- under the direction of the University of Illinois in Chicago, (U.I.C.). During the early spring thru June, 2012, there will be some financially reimbursible"internships" that any neighborhood adult can participate in just by calling Jonathan at (773)410-1479 or calling me, Rick Techman, at (773)585-9094. The internships are designed to be localized to the block you live on and would take only a few hours of your time. We are especially interested in Polish and Spanish speaking adults over 50. The program is scheduled to end in December, 2012.
Our April 16 speaker was Bruce Beveridge. A sea historian on the Titanic. He brought a great deal of insight on the sinking of this ship which is not readily available in genral history books and speakers.
Our May 21meeting will feature a Chicago Public School teacher who will tell us a little bit about himself, his career as an instructor and what we might expect regarding changes in the upcoming school year.
Alderman Michael Zalewski's office was contacted once about a week ago to see if he could give our organization a current State of the Ward address. As of April 27 we did not get a confirmation of his attendance. I will continue to attempt to reach the Alderman's office so we may hear about our city's progress under the new mayor at our June 18 meeting. Regardless of the outcome, we will have a meeting in the JFK library in June with a quality speaker. We will have our annual summer recess in July and August.
Finally I want to thank Henry Pukala for his hard work and effort to keep the Garfield Ridge Civic League a recognized organization in our community. Starting by getting a great banner to display at all of our meetings and parades followed by his willingness to continue as our vice-president for another year, it is great to have him return this fall. I also want to thank Ed Franczyk, Bill Kuda and Richard Schultz for agreeing to continue on as trustees for the 2012-2013 board year. Michele Techman will continue as Treasurer.
The new Garfield Ridge Civic League board year begins Monday, September 17. Membership ($5 each person) renewal forms will be enclosed in the September mailling. Your financial contributions in membership dues and voluntary raffles allow us to retain our high quality of service to our community.
The last meeting of the 2012 year will be October 15. We will recess in November for Thanksgiving and again in December for Christmas. After speaking with Principal George Szkzapiac in March, it appears all of the above dates will be good for meetings. The September, 2012 and January 2013 mailings will outline our plans for the new year.
By the way, look for our little "ditty" in the Southwest Home Equity Assurance handbook due on your doorstep in May.

Examples of our achievements follow under "About Us." It is important to mention the Clearing Civic League has worked with us on many of the issues we've faced to help secure a better future for all elements of this southwest side community.
Each meeting begins promptly at 7:00p.m. For each meeting we recruit a high demand presenter from government or business to inform us on their specialty and how it relates to the community. We break for summer vacation every July and August. We also have Christmas break in December. (No meetings these three months of the year.)
All southwest side taxpayers, homeowners and residents are welcome to attend at no cost.
